Beastiary

We have not included the Zerg, Protoss, or Terran in this index

Arachnis Brood-Keeper

The Arachnis Brood-Keeper was assimilated into the Zerg Swarm as the Queen.

Bengalaas

The homeworld of the Bengalaas is Aiur, so you can imagine why they are comfortable only in lush, jungle habitats. According to Benjamin Slater, Doctor of Zoology: "The Bengalaas are not only one of the most colorful creatures in the universe, but are also counted amongst it's most feared predators. These jungle cats love to toy with their prey and have been observed slapping smaller creatures about in a sadistically playful manner for several minutes before finally making the kill with one swift bite to the neck. The predatory habits of the Bengalaas are not limited to small or defenseless animals, however. Exhibiting acutely intelligent hunting tactics, packs of Bengalaas can bring down an aggressive, dangerous target that is several times their own size. These noble cats are truly one of nature's finest and deadliest creations."

People enjoy watching the Bengalaas so much that Safariland has created Bengalaas: The Amazing Bengalaas Exhibit, which is the most technologically advanced animal environment ever created. Their landscape architects and technical engineers have spent over three years designing a habitat that faithfully mimics the actual conditions on Aiur. They were even able to import several different plants native to Aiur to make the massive cats feel even more at home. Exclusive merchandise is also available there at the Bengalaas, Wow! gift shop for those who wish to take home the pride of the jungle.

Brontolith

The Brontolith were docile creatures that were assimilated into the Zerg Swarm as the Ultralisks.

Gargantis Proximae

The semi-intelligent, space-faring behemoths known as the Gargantis Proximae were inducted into the Zerg Swarm as Overlords so that their heightened senses could benefit Zerg warriors in battle. The Gargantis flyers were assimilated into the Swarm so well that the Zerg Cerebrates used them to maintain control over their forces. They resemble the Portuguese man-o-war of planet Earth.

Gashyrr Wasp

The savage Gashyrr Wasps of Eldersthine were inducted into the Zerg Swarm as Drones to serve as resource gatherers.

Kakaru

The Kakaru is a large, purple flying reptilian creature with orange wings. It can be recognized by a bony ridge protruding from the back of its skull. The call of the Kakaru can be heard echoing across the night in the twilight world of Shakuras.

Mantis Screamer

The roving Mantis Screamer of the desolate Dinares Sector bears much resemblence to its evolved Zerg form, the Mutalisk. Its nesting form resembles the Zerg Guardian. The Mantis Screamers built their towering nests on lifeless worlds, using any surfaces that could be found. The Mantis aeries were the blueprint upon which the Zerg Spires were based.

Ragnasaur

The Ragnasaur is an ash world creature with armor tough enough to withstand the harsh conditions of its homeworld Char. Its head features large, glowing yellow eyes, whiskers, and a snout. It crawls on the ground using its two legs and its flat, lobster-like tail.

Rhynadon

The Rhynadon, a giant creature resembling the rhinoceros of planet Earth, can often be seen stomping across the plains of badland environments. It is covered with thick armored plates, and has a large horn protruding from its head.

Scantid

The original strain of the scorpian-like Scantid grew to a length no greater than 15 centimeters and was a common inhabitant of the desert regions of Korhal IV. The insect's mild venom, used to repel predatory animals, caused nothing more than mild rash and bothersome itching to those inadvertently stung by the shy animals. After Korhal was ravaged by nuclear fire in the surprise attack by the Confederates, nothing was left alive on the surface of the planet. Although the lowly Scantid survived in their deep underground communal burrows, exposure to massive radiation forever changed the creatures.

Where once they had been nothing more than a footnote in entomology journals, the Scantid were now monstrous beasts with claws capable of ripping a man in half and a stinger filled with an extremely lethal poison. If it were not for their lack of innate aggressiveness and the instinctive reflex to flee when threatened or injured, the Scantid may have over-run the planet, rendering Korhal virtually uninhabitable. Their communal instinct has also survived, and a large number of them live populate an area known as Scorpion Ravine is home to a large nest of the creatures. Although it seems dangerous, remember that the Scantid is more afraid of you than you are of it.

Slothien

The peaceful, herbivore herds of the caterpillar-like Slothien were assimilated into the Zerg Swarm in order to produce one of the most fierce and diabolical of the Zerg strains, the Hydralisk. It is not a coincidence that the nests of the Slothien bears a passing resemblance to the Hydralisk Den.

Ursadon

The barren, frozen wastelands of Braxis are some of the most unforgiving places in the sector. A thick layer of permafrost allows little in the way of plant life to thrive and brutal winter storms constantly rage across the plains. Even in such harsh conditions, however, the Ursadon thrives. Ursadons have also been found on other ice worlds, including a dark moon that Zeratul encountered on one of his journeys, so it is confirmed that they have been found even outside of their homeworld Braxis. They resemble the polar bears of planet Earth.

This majestic beast is truly the lord of the tundra, having no natural enemies. Often found near ice floes, Ursadons are carnivorous creatures that hunt in the icy water for food. Instances of attacks on humans are thankfully rare, but the few recorded instances of an enraged Ursadon attack have always ended in tragedy. The Koprulu Wilderness Society recommends keeping a safe distance from these noble creatures while on Braxis, both for your own safety and that of the Ursadon.

Zz'gashi Dune-runner

The small, savage dune-runners of the sand world Zz'gash were incorporated into the Zerg Swarm as Zerglings to serve as scouts and initial assault troops.
